This archetype focused on hitting some of the main weakness of this format with powerful and efficient attack costs, while attempting to shut down other decks relying on their abilities with Garbodor. This deck would go on to win US Nationals in 2014 with the addition of Druddigon from Flashfire. Blastoise becomes a much more difficult match-up in this format without the help of Druddigon for Black Kyurem EX, but is still a strong archetype with close to good match-ups against a lot of the meta.
Blastoise:

Pokémon (15) | Trainers (33) | Energy (12) |
3x Blastoise 1x Wartortle 4x Squirtle 2x Black Kyurem EX 2x Keldeo EX 1x Electrode 1x Voltorb 1x Black Kyurem |
4x Skyla 4x Professor Juniper 2x N 1x Colress 4x Superior Energy Retrieval 4x Rare Candy 3x Ultra Ball 2x Pokemon Catcher 1x Tool Scrapper 1x Level Ball 1x Heavy Ball 1x Professor’s Letter 1x Super Rod 1x Dowsing Machine 3x Tropical Beach |
9x Water Energy 3x Lightning Energy |

This archetype focused on setting up a Blastoise as quickly as possible, with the intention of being able to hit big numbers each turn with Black Kyurem EX or Keldeo EX. This list is 59/60 cards of Daniel Altavilla’s winning Georgia Regionals list where he played a Suicuine PLB instead of 4th Squirtle. This was a great tech for RayBoar and some other niche situations but hurt consistency.
Dark / Garbodor:

Pokémon (12) | Trainers (37) | Energy (11) |
2x Darkrai EX 2x Yveltal EX 2x Garbodor 2x Trubbish 1x Jirachi EX 1x Absol 1x Yveltal 1x Sableye |
4x Professor Juniper 4x N 1x Colress 4x Ultra Ball 4x Dark Patch 4x Hypnotoxic Laser 3x Float Stone 3x Muscle Band 2x Bicycle 2x Pokemon Catcher 1x Professor’s Letter 1x Enhanced Hammer 1x Random Receiver 1x Dowsing Machine 2x Virbank City Gym |
7x Darkness Energy 4x Double Colorless Energy |

Yveltal Garbodor is one of the defining deck archetypes of this era, focusing on efficient attack costs which could reach high numbers when needed in combination with powerful Item cards like Dark Patch and Hypnotoxic Laser. Garbodor would slow down many key decks in the format, turning off utility like Blastoise, Virizion EX and Electrode, while making N much more impactful. Yveltal EX’s release provided a big boost for the deck as it introduced two new powerful energy efficient attacks, while covering Darkrai’s Weakness to fighting.
Plasma:

Pokémon (11) | Trainers (35) | Energy (14) |
4x Deoxys EX 2x Lugia EX 2x Thundurus EX 1x Palkia EX 1x Snorlax 1x Absol |
4x Professor Juniper 4x N 3x Colress 3x Skyla 4x Muscle Band 4x Colress Machine 3x Team Plasma Ball 3x Switch 2x Tool Scrapper 2x Hypnotoxic Laser 1x Ultra Ball 1x Escape Rope 1x Scramble Switch |
4x Double Colorless Energy 4x Prism Energy 4x Plasma Energy 2x Rainbow Energy |

This list was piloted by Chase Moloney and Trevore Read to a win and second place respectively at BC Provincials, as well as further success. While focusing on consistency, they cleverly added 2 Hypnotoxic Lasers to take advantage of opponents Virbank City Gyms. Palkia EX improved your matchup against Blastoise and RayBoar as they have a tough time dealing with it switching back to the bench while hitting for weakness.
RayBoar:

Pokémon (16) | Trainers (33) | Energy (11) |
3x Rayquaza EX 2x Emboar 1x Pignite 3x Tepig 3x Delphox 1x Braixen 3x Fennekin |
4x Skyla 4x Professor Juniper 3x N 1x Colress 4x Rare Candy 4x Ultra Ball 4x Superior Energy Retrieval 2x Level Ball 2x Pokemon Catcher 1x Super Rod 1x Dowsing Machine 3x Tropical Beach |
8x Fire Energy 3x Lightning Energy |
Source | Proxy Deck |
Functioning similarly to Blastoise, Rayboar focused on setting up a quick Emboar and Delphox with the goal of hitting big numbers each turn with Rayquaza EX’s Dragon Burst or Delphox’s Blaze Ball. The archetype excelled at beating Virizion Genesect, and held its own against Blastoise and some of the other top tier decks. However, it tended to struggle against Plasma, and Garbodor focused decks.
VirGen:

Pokémon (13) | Trainers (33) | Energy (14) |
4x Virizion EX 3x Genesect EX 2x Roserade 2x Roselia 1x Jirachi EX 1x Sigilyph |
4x Skyla 4x Professor Juniper 4x N 2x Shadow Triad 1x Colress 3x Energy Switch 3x Muscle Band 2x Tool Scrapper 2x Ultra Ball 2x Level Ball 1x Professor’s Letter 1x Super Rod 1x G Booster 3x Skyarrow Bridge |
10x Grass Energy 4x Plasma Energy |

This particular list won Madison Regionals in 2014, piloted by Ben Potter. Virizion EX allowed you to accelerate Energy to your main attacker Genesect EX, while also providing protection against the formats focus on Hypnotoxic Laser with its Verdant Wind Ability. Genesect EX provided consistent damage, with the ability to knockout anything in the format with the G Booster Ace Spec. Roserade is an amazing addition for consistency as it lets you find any card but is particularly useful to find G Booster or a clutch plasma energy. This deck also went on to win the World Championships later this year, and is a powerhouse that should not be underestimated.
